The Burger Barn is a Malcolm Island staple that’s been serving tourists and locals alike hot, filling grub for a number of years. It’s located about 2 kilometers from the ferry dock in downtown Sointula. It’ll take around 4 minutes to drive or 25 minutes to walk to this popular restaurant from the downtown area.
Once there, diners step up onto the restaurant’s raised platform to order from the window. After you get your food, you can enjoy it at one of the picnic tables scattered about in front of the restaurant. There’s even a rustic oceanfront eating area that offers some shelter from the wind or rain on drizzly days, not to mention offers some stunning views while you eat.
Like many restaurants in Sointula, Burger Barn is open seasonally. Depending on the year and the weather, the restaurant typically stays open into September. Most years they open for the season in early May. Their operating hours also vary by season. They’re typically open from Noon until around 7:30 during the summer months. During the late Spring and early Fall, hours may be reduced.

Don’t let the name fool you — there’s much more than burgers on the menu at the Burger Barn. They also offer a variety of wraps, chicken strips, sides, and another popular staple, fish and chips.
Of course, there are also plenty of burger varieties to choose from. The basic burger comes with mayo, relish, pickles, grilled onions, and the Burger Barn’s special sauce — a secret recipe! There’s also a Bacon Mushroom Cheddar burger for those that want something a bit more decadent.
Burger Barn has a tasty veggie burger for those looking for a meat alternative. You can also get a crispy cod or halibut sandwich. Speaking of fish, their popular fish and chips come in two options; cod and fries or halibut and fries.
A favorite at Burger Barn is their Greek Burger. This comes as a beef, chicken, veggie, or halibut sandwich on a bun, topped with mayo, grilled onion, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, peppers, black olives, and feta cheese, as well as their special sauce. You can also order this Greek dish as a wrap instead.
One unique menu item that’s available on a limited basis is their Deep Fried Wild Salmon and Fries. It’s a unique take on fish and chips you likely won’t find outside of British Columbia! Wash down your fish or burger with a cold, delicious milkshake, available in chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla.
